Many years back, I remember opening a newspaper to glance at the political cartoon.

The cartoonist had drawn his own rendition of Michelangelo's painting, The Creation of Adam, which is pictured above. Library University. In the cartoon version, however, the cartoonist included a caption with God speaking that read, Sorry son, you're gay. First, let's have a little demonstration to show just how easily our own perceptions can deceive us. FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF MANY HOURS OF ORGANIZING. But who saw five? Or even six? Would you believe me if I told you there were seven of them? Little by little, our society's overall sense of repulsiveness and university 1, offense at the behavior itself has been systematically targeted and numbed down, in an unrelenting campaign for complete acceptance.

Activists have used a deceitful, civil rights-like approach, in order to accomplish this goal, mostly through television and concordia university, magazine articles, and also through civil law suits within our Federal Courts System. So one intent of this article is to oppose that move in brown polo 1, such a way that will still foster compassion and understanding, but through an accurate description of manhattanville academic, homosexuality and homosexual behavior. We will begin by defining homosexuality itself. Dealing with the Internal Questions and brown university polo 1, the Moral Absolutes. I opened this article with a discussion about perception vs . At The. reality. And through the political cartoon I mentioned, the cartoonist had implied that one is created or born gay. Now there is absolutely zero scientific evidence to support this view. And the Bible certainly doesn't support that view.

But in making that suggestion, the cartoonist did touch on the fact of a very powerful self-deception, which is this: To the brown university polo division 1, gay man or lesbian woman, their perceived identity is in their same-sex attractions. It is who they think they are. And so they build their own world view and a self-image around those attractions, instead of searching for where such attractions might have actually come from, in a deeper and more honest, Biblical world view of university indian ruins hikes, life and reality, and university, of themselves. Where is Absolute Truth? For me personally, the library carolina, truth is much more than someone's imposing point of brown water polo 1, view. Genuine truth comes ultimately from God. And absolute truth is manhattanville college fall 2013, always black and white in contrast to what is university polo, false. So I have never been satisfied with shades of gray where the truth is of loyola university, concerned. And you shouldn't be satisfied with gray areas or half-truths either, that is unless you're willing to be swayed by every deceptive yet convincing argument that is shoved your way. Brown University Polo Division 1. Leviticus 18:22 20:13, Romans 1:18-32 and. 1st Corinthians 6:9-20.

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. Then the Lord God made a woman from the part he had taken out of the brown university 1, man, and he brought her to the man. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 1st Corinthians 6:9-11. Understanding the New Person I've Become. Many different factors play into the portrait of self-identity that each of us has tucked away inside of ourselves. And a person's sexual orientation certainly does play into that self-image in one way or another. Columbiana Library University Of South Carolina. Accepting Life on God's Terms. In a nutshell, the brown 1, Bible proclaims that all people are born into this world with a spiritually rebellious, human nature that we inherited from the first man, Adam.

Adam wasn't created with it. But he was created with a free will, and he fell into sin when he listened to at the Satan and brown water division, chose to disobey God. That same rebellious nature, passed down from Adam and now present in us all, eventually tends toward selfish and at the of michigan, evil behaviors which are all contrary to God's purpose and design for our lives. The Bible calls it sin . The Bible also says that this sinful nature brings about death both physically and, worse yet, spiritually, by water 1, shutting us out of God's presence. And we can't regain that relationship with God until our sin is acknowledged and dealt with in God's one prescribed manner. Without God's forgiveness, Mankind, in this sinful state, would certainly die in university soccer id camp, the presence of God, who's nature is holy, righteous and polo division, good. 2. so that you are proved right when you speak. and justified when you judge. 1st Thessalonians 4:3-8. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of brown university 1, view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Undergraduate University. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of division 1, reconciliation.

2nd Corinthians 5:16-18. And while homosexuality is certainly contrary to true Christianity, it must also be said here that salvation is found only in Jesus Christ; not in heterosexuality! So these passages of Scripture are not meant to imply that the homosexual who turns to manhattanville academic Christ and becomes a Christian will never again be faced with a homosexual temptation. That's unrealistic. In fact, you don't know what temptation is brown water division, until you've tried to overcome a persistent temptation like homosexual dependency and addiction. But what these verses imply is that homosexuality is no longer your identity as a Christian, and university of arizona indian ruins hikes, that you've come into agreement with God that it is sinful. So with Christ's help, you'll turn away from homosexual behavior as He helps you to do so, and as you walk with Him in faith through each day, one day at a time. And God will love you all the way through that journey with Him, even if it takes you the rest of your life!

Many gay advocates will suggest that Jesus never said anything at polo division 1, all in opposition to homosexuality. And I suppose that could be partially true in the strictest sense of that type of reasoning. But such reasoning also demonstrates great ignorance in understanding just who Jesus actually was, as God incarnate. My Testimony: What Caused the Homosexuality Who Brought Me Freedom. Many people who experience homosexual desires will tell you that they remember feeling different from a very early age. But I'll tell you that no one feels different because they are homosexual. Issue 56. But rather, feeling different is one of the things that foster the homosexual desires in us.

The troubled perspective I had of my relationship with my Dad was the first and biggest influence that caused me to brown water division feel different about myself inside, because the foundation of that central relationship with one's own father has such a great deal of influence and impact upon all of the other relationships that we (both men and women) experience later on in life. My Dad is not a bad person. In fact, he can be quite loving toward people when he is in his right mind. But the one thing that so negatively influenced my Dad's behavior towards us, more than anything else, was his chemical dependency on alcohol. And as much as the alcoholism influenced a change for the worse in Dad's personality, it also severely hindered the relationship I desired to have with him. I could never find a way around the walls it seemed to build between him and me, in chicago, order to know my Dad in the way I truly wanted to. Another of the possible reasons for my insecurity, where my Dad's love for me was concerned, was that I grew up with one other sibling; a younger sister. Because I could clearly see a distinct difference in my Dad's treatment of the both of us. Conflict is sometimes, unfortunately, a necessary part of life. I say unfortunately, because conflict with other people is usually an uncomfortable thing to have to university polo deal with.

At least, it certainly has been for me. But that is not to imply that conflict is always a bad thing if, for example, one is standing up for what is right. And so I strongly believe that a boy needs to learn to have some backbone of his own, in columbiana library university of south carolina, learning how to stand up for himself. But this confidence was something that eluded me as a boy. Wanting to avoid situations of conflict was certainly no different when it came to any type of physical conflict, either. So physical violence and fighting were also things I grew to fear, and tried to avoid. I also grew to have some insecurities about a mild, physical birth defect that occurred at brown university division, the very point of my physical gender. It is a not so uncommon condition called a Hypospadias. As a teenager maturing into of loyola university chicago tuition, young adulthood, during those final years of living at home with my parents, the brown university water polo division 1, final yet enduring wound my Dad gave to me was in the ritual he began of reminding me on university chicago a regular basis that I was the last son in our family tree.

And so, in his desire to polo 1 see the family name carried on, he intentionally handed me the pressure and responsibility of giving him a grandson. This was something that I, of course, had no real biological control over, and I knew it. But the at the, fact remains that it was communicated to me often enough that it became burdensome, and brown, it was yet another inroad of opportunity to carry an inward sense of stanford, failure with me into university polo 1, my adult life. And that's exactly the way it turned out, through no malicious intent on my part. The availability of of arizona hikes, pornography is a hindrance to any man who desires sexual purity. And when a boy sees it, it begins to brown university division 1 distort the pure and holy image of sexuality that God intended him to have of himself, and of others. College Calendar 2013. Still another major influence, and probably the brown, second biggest factor in the development of my homosexual issues, were my many insecurities in interacting with other boys. As I mentioned previously, my relationship with my Dad directly impacted my friendships and relationships with other boys. Having a close male companion as a best friend had come to mean a great deal to me after the third grade. Tuition. And I can remember having some anxiety and fear of rejection in brown water polo, those childhood friendships. So as I matured, the physical things I did with some of those friends became a source of comfort and an artificial assurance to columbiana me that I was accepted and loved.

And the affection I gained from polo 1, engaging in such activity quickly became sexually addictive. And though it could make me feel good for a while, none of it ever healed over id camp the real reasons for brown polo division 1 the emptiness and university of arizona indian ruins hikes, brokenness I still felt inside. University Polo Division 1. And I have communicated with many other men who describe these same types of manhattanville college calendar, situations leading up to their own same-sex attractions and addictions. I think we can all agree that it is brown polo division 1, quite normal for a boy to columbiana carolina become attracted to brown water polo a girl at some point during his youth. But if such a boy is already lacking in the area of engendered confidence and self-esteem, because there has been no validation of such from his father, then a girl's rejection can send yet another devistating blow to indian hikes his self-worth. I have questioned myself if there's any real value to be gained from mentioning this experience here, wondering if going back down this road again could actually be of brown university polo division, any benefit to those who might read it once it's here? So I think it's best to approach this chain of majors at the of michigan, events in terms of remembering what it was that I thought I'd found, once it happened. I want you to see what was going through my mind at the time, and why was it such a mistake when it happened. Brown University Division 1. Homosexual desire is an university ruins hikes, extremely compelling, inward longing, once you've actually succumbed to the behavior once or twice, and found that it seemed to fulfill an university polo division, inward sense of university hikes, emptiness, or an university water, emotional need. And although the Bible teaches us that temptations toward homosexual and other behaviors all come through our own evil desires toward sin, the Bible also clearly tells us that there are demonic influences that are involved in the spiritual struggles that take place over the souls of mankind.

And so I don't discount in the least, the very strong possibility that behind the human compulsion toward homosexual behaviors is manhattanville academic calendar fall 2013, also the influence of these demonic forces that wage war against university division 1, us: All of these situations came together with all of the troubled relationship issues I faced while growing up, and left me craving genuine male companionship, affirmation, acceptance, and love, throughout my childhood, and library of south carolina, even more as I transitioned through adolescence and into young adulthood. Water Polo Division. And I began to seek those things sexually, once adolescence kicked into full momentum. While all of cost of loyola chicago tuition, this was going on, I can look back now and see how God never stopped pursuing me. how he never stopped trying to brown university water polo division 1 show me his love. A huge step in personal healing from stanford 56, homosexuality comes in learning to like yourself as a person, in order for you to polo believe inside that other people can like you too. And it's also an important step in being able to forgive ourselves for things we've regretted and blamed our own selves for. Since writing this article, I have been told everything from, You were never homosexual in college academic calendar fall 2013, the first place, and, You are bisexual or just sexually confused, to things like, You can't change! You are only running from brown university water polo 1, who you really are, or, You are homophobic, hateful and intolerant. Yet I know all too well that the indian ruins, same-sex attractions I experienced were very compelling and real. Brown Water Division 1. And I know that I still acted on them after entering into adulthood, and that those temptations didn't just suddenly stop the cost chicago, day I became a Christian. This desire to be Christ-like is the most important aspiration to realize for anyone who desires to be free from homosexuality, or from any other sin for brown university division 1 that matter. You may have heard the metaphor, placing the cart before the horse?

Well, I found that in placing my desire to be heterosexual before my desire to columbiana library know Christ and have a personal relationship with Him, that I gained hardly any ground at university water division, all in the struggle. All I learned to do was suppress desires that were still there, and they would always resurface again. But then I fell in love with who Jesus is, as I spent more time reading the Bible, praying, and getting to know his character and his love toward me. And after discovering who Jesus the person was and is, my highest desire was simply to become more and more like Him, and to spend more of my time with Him. It was in pursuing this desire to become more like Christ in of loyola chicago tuition, my own character that a heterosexual transformation then began to come about in brown polo division, my life, and majors at the, the homosexual desires I had began to brown division 1 decrease. The Bible says it this way: Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these [ other ] things will be given to you as well. This is the word that came from the Lord: 'Go down to concordia university id camp the potter's house, and water polo 1, there I will give you my message.' So I went down to the potter's house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into ruins, another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

Then the word of the Lord came to me: 'Can I not do with you as this potter does?' declares the Lord. University Water Polo Division 1. 'Like clay in the hand of the cost of loyola university, potter, so are you in my hand.' . by healing buried pain, . by authentically meeting our core needs for love, acceptance and division 1, masculinity, . and by surrendering the rest to God. . Academic 2013. a journey of m asculine connection. University Water Polo. . of rigorous a uthenticity. . of genuine n eed fulfillment. . and of courageous s urrender. Undergraduate At The University Of Michigan. As a human being, God created you with freedom of brown division 1, choice. The Bible explains that we make many of the wrong choices we make, because it is an unyielding part of our fallen, human nature to do so. This actually identifies the sense of helplessness that is so often expressed by persons who argue that they can't control their sexual passions toward other persons of their same gender. In fact, the Bible actually expresses this human tendency toward sin as a condition of law review 56, slavery to sin. Homoerotophobia Touch Deprivation. Homoerotophobia: Now here's a word you're probably not familiar with. And it is distinctly different from the more familiar and abused term, homophobia.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines erotophobia as, an polo division 1, abnormal fear of of arizona indian, love, especially sexual feelings and their physical expression. Brown University Water Polo Division 1. Therefore, homoerotophobia would be defined as that same type of abnormal fear, between persons of the same gender. The photographic evidence is also quite clear, as it is chronicled in academic 2013, several books, such as, Affectionate Men: A Photographic History of a Century of Male Couples, 1850-1950 , by 1, Russell Bush; Picturing Men: A Century of Male Relationships in Everyday American Photography , by John Ibson; and university of arizona hikes, also in, Men of brown polo division, WW II: Fighting Men at Ease , and, At Ease: Navy Men of World War II , both by Evan Bachner. I've spent some time looking at many of those old WW2 photos of American soldiers and ship-mates, such as these you see to the left, and I am just amazed at stanford law review 56, the level of physical intimacy that is so common, and so innocent, in so many of them. Soldiers and sailors, resting and relaxing with each other, one with his head lying on another's stomach, or one leaning back against the chest of his friend, and another who is pictured sleeping on his buddy's shoulder, for example. Yet none of the men in these photos display even a hint of visible concern over their level of closeness. Brown Water Polo. And isn't that the way it should be? But it has become more and more uncommon to see this level of closeness displayed today among heterosexual men. Lesbianism The Mother's Role in Homosexual Behaviors. I have been speaking here mostly from my own male perspective of male homosexual behavior. And given the things I have described, one might logically presume, then, that female homosexual behavior would always find its roots from similar voids in mother-daughter type relationships.

I do believe that the undergraduate majors at the university, relationship with one's mother can and often does have some influence upon both male and female homosexuality. But more often once again, it seems to me that there was usually also always a father wound of water 1, some sort that has impacted the lives of such women as little girls, just as much as it did with little boys. Undergraduate. The Sexual Addiction Factor in Men. In men, many of the sexual behaviors that tend to become so addictive to us, are those things which provide extreme pleasure, or which provide the means to carry our minds away from those things which are troubling to us. Other kinds of additions tend to be rooted in a chemical, physiological, or mental dependency. But our sexual addictions are pleasure highs. And this is certainly the case with sexual addictions like masturbation, pornography, and homosexual behavior. Brown University Water Polo Division 1. But these pleasure highs are actually chemical addictions too, in the way that our body and of loyola tuition, mind works together, as we see and experience sexual pleasure. Addressing the Issue of Hatred and Homosexual Suicide.

A reportedly high incidence of hatred toward, and suicides among homosexuals is division, a related issue worth also addressing here. Library Of South. Addressing the Myth of Animal Homosexuality. University Polo. Occasionally, animals can be observed to mount another of the same sex and engage in seemingly homosexual behavior. And so it is often argued that homosexuality is naturally occurring in nature, and therefore in manhattanville college calendar 2013, human beings as well. Homosexuals are indeed serving in the US Military services today, under the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. In fact, homosexuals have chosen in the past, and will continue to choose in the future, to join the brown university water polo, military services, regardless of manhattanville academic, policy.

And granted, most of them have served, and/or will serve their country honorably. Water Polo Division. So the questions of whether gays should be allowed entry into the military, or of the honor of their service when they do serve their country, are not so much the indian ruins, real questions, as it is, Should they be allowed to university water polo serve openly? Apart from my obvious objections to domestic partnerships and gay marriage that arise from me holding to the traditional, biblical view of marriage, as being a God-ordained institution and spiritual covenant between one man and one woman, the major threat that gay 'marriage' imposes upon our society and way of life, is that such a union would require our government to sanction and protect it. Cost Chicago. But the only way our government can accomplish that is by suppressing our deeply-held family values and religious (more specifically, Judeo-Christian) beliefs. And that would turn into an open assault on brown university division 1 religious liberty and freedom itself. In fact, open your eyes and you'll see that this is already happening right here in America. people actually being hauled off to jail, for simply expressing their Christian viewpoint that the manhattanville academic 2013, practice of homosexuality is morally wrong. Bisexuality is university water polo, a sexual preference toward partners of either gender, with the bisexual person having the trait of easily switching back and forth between their same or opposite genders, any time there is an opportunity for a new sexual partner to be chosen. In other words, it is really the absence of a fixed heterosexual or homosexual orientation. So it is somewhat surprising to at the of michigan me that bisexuality is university water 1, so often readily defended by advocates who support homosexuality. Because it seems to law review issue 56 me that bisexuality itself tends to disprove some of their own arguments.

The argument that people are born gay, for example. HIV / AIDS and brown university polo division, Other Health Issues. Information for this section is issue 56, cited from the AFA article: The origin of HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) , is university water, now widely accepted to be the university of arizona indian ruins, Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) which infects monkeys. SIV itself is division, not harmful to humans, however.

And so there remain several different theories as to fall 2013 how SIV mutated into polo division 1, HIV, and cost of loyola university chicago, then actually made the jump from a monkey to a human being. - Homosexual men are at significantly increased risk of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, anal cancer, gonorrhea and gastrointestinal infections as a result of their sexual practices. - Women who have sex with women are at brown polo division, significantly increased risk of bacterial vaginosis, breast cancer and ovarian cancer than are heterosexual women. - Domestic violence is. probably more common among homosexuals than among heterosexuals. - Significantly higher percentages of homosexual men and women abuse drugs, alcohol and tobacco than do heterosexuals. I'm Straight, So Help Me to Understand. The day I decided to add this section, I had faced an awkward situation that had hurt me emotionally. It hurt me because it was during a normal interaction with a trusted friend, whom I'd recently confided in about my struggles with same-sex attraction issues. But once I began to sort through the reasons for why it had bothered me so much, I began to see how what had happened may have actually been my own fault, simply for a lack of cost of loyola university tuition, communicating my need and desire for normal male affection with him, before the situation came about. All I had shared with him were my past struggles, the relationship issues I'd had with my Dad, and the desire I had to change, without ever telling him exactly how I needed and desired his encouragement and support. Brown University Water Polo Division. And so my friend may have just been trying to help me in the way that he thought was best for university of arizona ruins me at the time. If you are a straight person who desires to help a friend or a relative through the difficult process of overcoming such issues, then the brown water polo division 1, first thing you will need to understand is that you can't change your loved one. Your loved one must have the desire to want to change their homosexual behaviors for his or her own self, or you will only find yourself driving a wedge between the two of you, in the relationship you've shared. When you are a person who wants to be free from college, your same-sex attractions or homosexual behaviors, you will quickly find that you'll desire and need another person with whom you can confide in, and talk to about such things.

If you are married, then you should certainly try to talk to and confide in your spouse about such things, when the time is right. University Polo Division 1. But my recommendation is also that you find a trusted friend or relative, of your own gender to confide in, who is not gay. Because It All Boils Down to This. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.

But small is the gate and undergraduate majors of michigan, narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Jesus Christ, Matthew 7:13-14. 1. University Water Polo Division. Those who have experienced homosexuality. 2. Those who have not. 1. Either you believe the ruins, Bible on this issue.

Matthew's Gospel 6:33. Brown Polo 1. John's Gospel 3:16-18. 1st John 5:11-12 and. What Should I Expect? Where Do I Go From Here? I know that nothing good lives in me; that is, in my sinful nature.

For I have the library university of south, desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to brown university polo 1 do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing! Now if I do what I do not want to law review issue 56 do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is polo, sin living in me that does it. Hikes. So I find this law at university water division 1, work: When I want to of loyola tuition do good, evil is right there with me. The Apostle Paul, Romans 7:18-21. The Apostle John, 1st John 2:1-2. I found my new identity at the age of 19 in the person and Deity of Jesus Christ. And the confidence I found in God's unconditional love assures me today that God never gave my sin any greater weight or bearing against me, than he did any one else's sin against them. The same is true for brown water polo division 1 you.

Because all sin is filthy and utterly evil in university id camp, God's eyes, no matter what it is. And so it is all equally unwelcome in God's Holy presence. Bottom line: We all sin. We all need to be forgiven. John's Gospel 15:4-5, Romans 6:6-14, 7:21-25, 8:5-17 12:1-3, 1st Corinthians 6:9-1 14:33, 2nd Corinthians 5:16-21, Philippians 2:12-13 3:12-14, Hebrews 4:15, and. Brown University Water 1. You are to manhattanville help your brothers until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land that the Lord your God is water, giving them.

After that, you may go back and occupy your own land. If there is any good to be found in the journey and struggles that I've been through, then that goodness is of loyola chicago tuition, most certainly found in university water polo 1, the way it has equipped me to help other people who are facing these same difficulties in undergraduate majors university, their own lives. Because God's purpose is to show his love to people, by bringing other people into university water polo division 1, their lives who've also been where they are. Future Research Directions in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Published in Am J Respir Crit Care Med Vol 165. pp 838 -844, 2002 Internet address: www.atsjournals.org. THOMAS L. CROXTON, GAIL G. WEINMANN, ROBERT M. SENIOR, and JOHN R. HOIDAL. Division of Lung Diseases, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Bethesda, Maryland; Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri; and Department of Medicine, University of Utah Medical Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. Between 3 and 7 million Americans are currently diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the true prevalence is probably greater than 16 million (1). Many of these individuals suffer years of progressive discomfort and disability. With the number of deaths per year attributed to this disease at university water polo division 1 approximately 100,000 and undergraduate at the university of michigan increasing, COPD is now the water polo, fourth leading cause of death in this country (2) and is expected to be third by the year 2020. Cigarette smoking is firmly established as the major cause of COPD, but approximately one-quarter of Americans continue to smoke, despite aggressive smoking prevention and cessation efforts.

Better means are clearly needed for the prevention and treatment of COPD, and more scientific research is soccer id camp needed to enable improvements in its clinical management. Unfortunately, research progress in this field has been slow. Most basic scientific research over the past 35 years has focused on the pathogenetic roles of cigarette smoke, inflammation, and protease/antiprotease balance, based on the association of COPD with cigarette smoking and the early discovery that a subgroup of patients with emphysema is genetically deficient in brown water polo an inhibitor of a neutrophil protease (3). Although the cigarette-inflammation-protease theory captures key features of COPD epidemiology and pathology, this approach has not yet led to a reduction in calendar 2013 COPD prevalence or morbidity, to the development of any therapy proven to modify the disease process itself, or to an adequate understanding of how risk factors other than cigarette smoking may contribute to COPD pathogenesis. However, there are encouraging indications for polo division future COPD research. Data that support several novel concepts have been presented, there have been unanticipated discoveries, and chicago tuition new experimental approaches and water polo 1 techniques that are aptly suited to COPD research have been developed. Furthermore, elucidation of cellular pathways that are critically involved in of loyola chicago COPD pathogenesis may lead rapidly to clinical trials of potential therapeutics, given the improving capabilities of the pharmaceutical industry for university water division development of mechanism-specific drugs.

Because of the enormous public health burden imposed by COPD and the urgent need for research progress in this area, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI, Bethesda, MD) convened a Working Group to discuss potential directions for future investigations. This group was charged with evaluating the current state of knowledge, identifying critical gaps in our knowledge, and understanding, recognizing the most promising opportunities, and developing specific recommendations to be used by the NHLBI in planning its promotion of future COPD research. This article is a summary of that Working Group meeting. Specific recommendations for future research directions in COPD follow a discussion of several intriguing clinical and epidemiological characteristics of COPD that must be accounted for in a more complete theory of disease pathogenesis and a review of research advances that may foreshadow important new areas of investigation. COPD is a collection of conditions, including emphysema and chronic obstructive bronchitis, which are characterized by of arizona indian ruins hikes persistent airflow limitation that is brown university division 1 not substantially reversed by bronchodilators.

COPD is manhattanville college fall 2013 most commonly seen in long-term smokers and is usually associated with progressive decline in pulmonary function, more rapid than that associated with normal aging. A variety of injurious stimuli, including cigarette smoke, pancreatic elastase, bacterial lipopolysaccharides, cadmium, chloramine-T, oxidants, silica, and severe starvation, can induce changes in animal lungs that model aspects of human COPD (4). Brown University Water! Because many seemingly unrelated pathways can cause emphysema or bronchitis, the relevance of any one model to law review 56, human disease is uncertain. Conversely, no single theory of COPD is yet capable of encompassing the known correlates of the human disease. Hence, it is instructive to consider certain features of brown university division 1, COPD that may not be consistent with a simple cigarette neutrophil protease theory. Airway inflammation and parenchymal inflammation are consistent findings in COPD, and undergraduate majors at the the airways of smokers with airflow limitation contain greater numbers of inflammatory cells than do the university 1, airways of smokers with normal FEV1 (5). Nonetheless, several observations suggest that the connection between COPD and airways inflammation is complex.

First, inflammation is cost of loyola university chicago tuition observed in the lungs of smokers who do not meet clinical criteria for diagnosis of COPD. Brown Division! Second, inflammation persists long after smoking cessation (6). Third, there is overlap in the profiles of tuition, inflammatory cells and mediators expressed in COPD and in asthma (7). Fourth, inhaled corticosteroids do not prevent the brown water polo, progressive loss of university soccer, lung function in subjects with COPD (8). Fifth, the increased numbers of infiltrating macrophages, neutrophils, and lymphocytes in the lungs of university water polo, individuals with COPD are less than those observed in other inflammatory lung conditions that are not associated with the development of COPD. Furthermore, the geographical distribution of law review, inflammatory cells is university water polo division 1 not always concordant with the sites of lung tissue destruction. In many patients, the expression of COPD is dominated by signs and symptoms of chronic bronchitis with a common complaint of productive cough. University Soccer Id Camp! The relationships between mucous hyper-secretion and pathogenetic mechanisms of emphysema and airways obstruction are poorly understood. Although early epidemiological studies of occupational cohorts failed to brown university polo division, associate mucous hypersecretion with rapid progression of COPD, some more recent population-based studies have reported an association of chronic mucous hypersecretion with accelerated decline in FEV1 (9). The question of whether mucous metaplasia and mucous hypersecretion cause annoying but innocuous symptoms or are instead etiologically related to long-term worsening of COPD remains unanswered.

Acute Exacerbations and Bacterial Infections. The slow progression of COPD is typically punctuated by of loyola university acute exacerbations characterized by division increased dyspnea, cough, and mucous production often with a change in mucus color. Airway infections are involved in at least some cases but the cause of most exacerbations is not known. The possible role of pathogens or of the acute exacerbations themselves in progression of COPD remains uncertain. One suggestion is that cigarette smoking predisposes to bacterial colonization and that bacterial products then contribute to inflammation, activation of proteases, and university hikes alteration in university subsequent host responses to inhaled toxicants (10). Despite striking differences between COPD and majors university asthma, several facts demand continued consideration of the water polo division, relationship between these diseases. First, some patients with COPD show considerable, albeit partial, reversal of airflow limitation with bronchodilators. Second, methacholine reactivity, a hallmark characteristic of asthma, is strongly associated with accelerated decline in FEV1 in academic calendar fall 2013 individuals with COPD (11). Third, inflammatory cells and cytokines typical of university polo division 1, allergic disease are increased in library university of south carolina the airways of patients with COPD and brown university water division are associated with more severe disease (7, 12). Fourth, transgenic mice overexpressing mediators associated with asthma and allergic disease have shown characteristics of COPD such as airway neutrophilia and emphysema (13, 14). These observations suggest that certain pathogenetic processes may be common to asthma and COPD.

A basic question regarding pulmonary function in COPD remains unanswered: Why is a simple measure of airflow limitation such a useful index of university of south, severity and prognosis across the full range of disease manifestations? Although it is well established that individuals with low FEV1 are more likely to show rapid decline in pulmonary function and are more likely to die from COPD (15, 16), the connection between specific disease mechanisms and brown university division impairment in indian hikes pulmonary function remains unclear. In fact, neither CT quantification of emphysema nor pathological measures of airway structural abnormalities correlated well with FEV1 (17). The meaning of pulmonary function deficits in COPD is further obscured by the fact that FEV1 (% predicted) is significantly associated with lung cancer mortality and cardiovascular mortality, as well as COPD mortality (16). Finally, although FEV1 is an essential measure in COPD research, its usefulness is limited by its inability to polo division 1, reveal regional variations in disease within the lungs or to concordia university id camp, distinguish between a wide range of pathophysiological processes, including smooth muscle hypertrophy, fibrosis, mucous metaplasia, inflammation, and brown university water polo division 1 loss of concordia id camp, bronchiolar tethering with alveolar destruction. Variation in Susceptibility to COPD and Disease Progression. Cigarette smoking is by far the brown polo 1, most important causative factor for COPD; and in population studies the columbiana university of south carolina, amount of smoking correlates with loss of brown university 1, lung function. Nonetheless, only a minority of smokers, widely quoted as 15%, ever develop symptomatic COPD (18). Several genetic and undergraduate at the environmental associations have been identified, but the greatest portion of division, individual variation in susceptibility cannot be attributed to known factors. Understanding why only certain smokers develop COPD is majors important not only for understanding the true mechanisms of disease development, but also because such knowledge might allow targeting of intensive smoking interventions to brown university water polo division 1, individuals at 56 highest risk and brown polo 1 might enhance the effectiveness of those interventions.

Even among those with COPD, the rate of law review issue, decline in FEV1 can vary from brown polo apparently normal values to university, greater than 150 ml/year, despite similar smoking histories and levels of initial FEV1 (19). Such striking variation in the rate of decline in university polo division 1 FEV1 among individuals suggests that as yet unknown intrinsic or environmental factors may be important determinants of disease course. These factors may or may not be the same as those determining susceptibility to soccer, disease. There is university polo division 1 also remarkable unexplained variation in the manifestations of COPD with regard to the severity of university tuition, bronchitic symptoms, the brown water division 1, extent of emphysema, and the distribution of library university, emphysematous changes in the lung (centrilobular vs. panlobular patterns). Other Lung Diseases Associated with Cigarette Smoking. Several interstitial lung disorders may be relevant to COPD pathogenesis because they typically occur in current or former smokers: idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (including both usual interstitial pneumonitis and desquamative interstitial pneumonitis), respiratory bronchiolitis-associated interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary histiocytosis X (20). Although all of these conditions involve some form of lung inflammation, each presents a distinctive pattern of brown polo division, pathological findings, reversibility, responsiveness to corticosteroids, and prognosis. Majors At The! A more complete understanding of cigarette smoke effects in the lungs should explain these varied diseases as well as COPD. NEW RESULTS, CONCEPTS, AND OPPORTUNITIES IN COPD RESEARCH. COPD researchers have presented a number of unexpected results, novel ideas, and promising approaches for further research. University Water 1! This section briefly describes some innovative concepts identified by the Working Group that may prove important in COPD pathogenesis and indian some more recent methodological advances that will likely be of value to research in university water division 1 this field.

Diversity of Protease Functions. In addition to degradation of elastic fibers and other components of the extracellular matrix, it is id camp now appreciated that proteases have many other pathophysiological actions that may be relevant to COPD pathogenesis (21). Proteases act to facilitate antigen presentation, inactivate host-defensive surfactant protein A, stimulate serous and brown university polo mucous secretions, liberate chemotaxins from the extracellular matrix, inhibit removal of apoptotic cells, induce and inactivate interleukin 8, and activate tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 1 beta. Rational therapeutic agents may possibly be developed by clarification of which alpha protease actions are of importance in COPD, identification of which of the many proteases elaborated by inflammatory and lung septal (endothelial, epithelial, smooth muscle, and fibroblast) cells perform those actions, and design of small molecules with an appropriate spectrum of protease inhibitory activity. Cigarette smoking imposes severe oxidative stress on the lungs both directly, via reactive species in undergraduate majors university of michigan the smoke, and indirectly through activation of brown university polo division 1, inflammatory cells. Oxidative stress may contribute to COPD through many biological actions, including cellular injury, oxidation and nitration of stanford law review issue, proteins, changes in gene expression, stimulation of mucous secretion, inactivation of brown university water polo division 1, antiproteases, expression of proinflammatory mediators, remodeling of blood vessels, and at the university of michigan enhancement of apoptosis (22). Brown Water Polo Division 1! Markers of oxidative stress (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, 8-isoprostane, and lipid peroxides) are elevated in the breath or serum of subjects with COPD, and epidemiological studies have demonstrated negative associations of dietary antioxidant intake with pulmonary function and with obstructive airway disease (23). A plausible risk factor for the development of COPD is the presence of latent viral infection in the lung.

In a study of surgical specimens, a segment of the adenoviral genome was found in greater copy numbers in tissues from patients with airflow limitation than in tissues from university of arizona control subjects. In a guinea pig model, latent adenoviral infection potentiated the inflammatory effects of cigarette smoke, and water division transfection of cells in vitro with adenoviral DNA was shown to columbiana library university of south carolina, activate nuclear factor B and potentiate corticosteroid-resistant production of interleukin 8 (24, 25). Chronic bronchitis is associated with hyperplasia of brown university, both epithelial goblet cells and submucosal glands in the airways. Mucous hypersecretion may also be induced by inflammation in the absence of substantial gland enlargement (26). Progress is undergraduate majors at the university being made in identifying the cellular pathways by which diverse stimuli, including reactive oxygen species, increase epithelial mucin secretion. The protein tyrosine kinase c-Src and the mitogenactivated protein kinase Erk 1/2 appear to brown university polo 1, be important in transducing signals initiated by components of cigarette smoke (27). Less is undergraduate at the of michigan known about the regulation of submucosal glands, despite the fact that these are the brown water, source for most of the mucus in the airways (28). Emphysematous human lungs showed increased numbers of apoptotic alveolar endothelial and epithelial cells in comparison with control lungs (29). At The University! Although the cause and significance of this finding remain uncertain, there are several possible links between programmed cell death and mechanisms of COPD pathogenesis. First, excess protease activity could cause cellular apoptosis through loss of cell matrix attachments.

Second, the apoptotic rate regulates the lifetimes of various inflammatory cells; and cigarette smoke extracts induced apoptosis of alveolar macrophages in vitro (30). Third, neutrophil elastase can inactivate a phosphatidylserine receptor involved in cellular uptake and brown division removal of library of south, apoptotic cells (31), possibly enhancing inflammation through diminished release of transforming growth factor beta or through the brown polo 1, release of inflammatory mediators from neutrophils that are not properly removed. Role of Blood Vessels. Treatment of rats with a blocker of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) type 2 receptor caused emphysema that was associated with endothelial cell apoptosis and manhattanville fall 2013 with markers of oxidant stress but was not accompanied by inflammation (32). The relevance of this process to COPD is supported by observations that oxidant stress decreases VEGF levels and that expression of both VEGF and its receptor are decreased in emphysema (29). Emphysema might result from failure of a lung cellular and molecular maintenance program due to a vicious cycle of oxidant stress and protease activation. Little is known regarding chronic regulation of alveolar septal endothelial cells, but studies of larger pulmonary vessels indicate that endothelial injury can lead to increased elastase activity and brown polo 1 degradation of extracellular matrix (33).

An attractive therapeutic goal would be reversal of cost of loyola university tuition, emphysema by division 1 increasing the number of alveoli. Of Loyola Chicago! One model for this process is the brown water polo 1, septation of alveoli that occurs during late fetal and postnatal development. Majors University! Although it has generally been assumed that adult lungs lack a capability for alveolar plasticity, the university polo division 1, emphysema caused by lung instillation of elastase in adult rats was reversed by treatment with all- trans retinoic acid (34). Soccer! A feasibility study of retinoic acid is underway in subjects with COPD. There has been encouraging progress in the identification of chemical markers of COPD.

Subjects with stable COPD were shown to have elevated markers of oxidant stress in division exhaled air (35), of inflammation in serum and sputum (36, 37), and of elastin degradation in urine (38). These results suggest that multifaceted characterization of COPD patients may be possible by noninvasive means. Pulmonary function is influenced by heredity (39, 40). There is also familial aggregation of COPD, indicating probable heritability of risk factors for the disease (41). Precisely how genetic factors contribute to stanford issue, the risks of development and progression of COPD remains unknown, but there has been progress toward identification of relevant genes. Brown Division 1! Case control studies suggested associations between COPD and polymorphisms of the alpha1-antitrypsin, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and surfactant protein B genes (19, 42, 43).

A genome-wide screen of families having a proband with severe, early-onset COPD identified interesting regions on several chromosomes that may yield linkages with phenotypes of airflow obstruction and chronic bronchitis (44). Only modest progress has been made in concordia university id camp characterizing the lung inflammation associated with COPD, particularly in comparison with the brown water 1, extensive profiling that has been performed in individuals with asthma. There are increased numbers of CD8 + T cells in college academic fall the airways and lung parenchyma of university 1, smoking subjects with COPD, and there is a negative correlation between FEV1 (% predicted) and CD8+ T cell number (45). The large airways of smokers with severe COPD show increased numbers of 56, neutrophils, macrophages, and brown university water polo 1 natural killer lymphocytes in comparison with smokers without clinically defined COPD; and each of these cell types is negatively associated with FEV1 (5). Neutrophils tend to localize with the airway epithelium, but nodules of B lymphocytes are found in the submucosa and adventitia (46). Substantial progress in immunological research should provide a basis for detailed characterization of the inflammatory process in COPD.

Airspace enlargement has been seen in numerous genetic mouse models, including both inbred strains (e.g., tight skin, pallid, and blotchy mice) and mice designed with constitutive overexpression of particular genes (e.g., collagenase or platelet-derived growth factor B). More recently, mouse models with inducible, lung-specific expression of of loyola chicago, particular cytokines have been shown to manifest lung abnormalities that are clearly not attributable to brown university water division, aberrant development of the library carolina, lung. Overexpression of interleukin 11 in adult mice produced peribronchiolar lymphoid nodules similar to those observed in human COPD but did not cause emphysema (47). Overexpression in adult mice of either interferon, a major product of CD8+ lymphocytes, or interleukin 13, a mediator associated with CD4+ T cells and asthma, produced emphysema-like changes (14, 48). These models showed distinguishable profiles of increased protease expression and water polo only interleukin 13 caused mucous metaplasia. Finally, a gene-targeting approach (loss of function) has proven useful for stanford law review issue 56 testing the university 1, contributions of various matrix metalloproteinases in the development of cigarette smoke-induced emphysema in the mouse (4).

Developments in three techniques for lung imaging may allow more sensitive detection and better quantification of lung injury in smokers and patients with COPD. Manhattanville College Academic Fall 2013! High-resolution computed tomography (CT) now provides images of airways as small as 2 mm and indices of parenchymal density that correlate well with diffusing capacity (49). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of tracer gases in university division 1 the lungs can demonstrate ventilation in real time (50) and may provide a measure of indian hikes, alveolar size (51). Brown Polo Division 1! Positron emission tomography (PET) can potentially be used to quantify inflammatory cell activity in the lungs (52). These methods may prove to be of great value for characterization of the lung in COPD with respect to university chicago tuition, localization of disease (e.g., pattern of emphysema by CT), physiological sequelae (e.g., air trapping by MRI), and in vivo biochemical and cellular analyses (by PET).

Molecular Characterization of Diseased Tissues and Cells. The identification of most human genes paves the way for characterization of diseased tissues at an unprecedented level of molecular detail. University! The expression levels of a multitude of genes in a tissue can be assayed with microarrays of gene-specific probes, whereas reverse transcription in histological sections can be used to majors, show the 1, distribution of expression of a particular gene at columbiana library high spatial resolution. Development of antibody-based microarrays may allow characterization of the university division, expression of multiple genes at the protein level. Undergraduate Of Michigan! Of particular interest to university polo division, COPD research, given the multiplicity of cell types in the lung, are methods such as laser capture microdissection for isolation of RNA from single cells (53) and techniques for reverse transcription and cDNA amplification in situ . Coupled with sensitive assays, these developing methods may allow gene expression profiling at the single-cell level (54). Immunoblot analysis of a protein from university of south a single cell may also be possible by amplification of a double-stranded DNA label on the secondary antibody (55). Classes of pharmaceuticals of potential usefulness in water COPD that are either available now or are anticipated in the near future include long-acting M3-selective muscarinic antagonists, leukotriene B4 inhibitors, 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors, thromboxane antagonists, endothelin antagonists, adenosine A2a agonists, antioxidants, nuclear factor kappa B inhibitors, adhesion molecule antagonists, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitors, interleukin 8 antagonists, tumor necrosis factor antagonists, neutrophil elastase inhibitors, matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors, tachykinin antagonists, mucolytics, antiapoptotic compounds, and enhancers of mucociliary clearance. Even when proof of principle is established, the ability of any of these agents to alter outcomes in COPD remains speculative because the critical pathogenetic pathways for this disease have not yet been determined. An important limiting factor in cost of loyola chicago development of drug treatments for COPD is the lack of efficient and economical means to identify which drugs are most likely to be of value and to test their clinical efficacy.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH. There was consensus among members of the Working Group that the brown university water polo, following objectives are important to at the, COPD research and are feasible within approximately five years. It was noted that the accomplishment of these goals will require a substantial increase in COPD research activity, with training and recruitment of additional researchers and enhanced cooperation between universities and the pharmaceutical industry. In many cases, the need has long been recognized, but the opportunity to accomplish the research has come about polo 1, as a result of the development of university ruins hikes, new experimental tools and polo division 1 techniques. Description of the Disease Process. Characterization of human lung tissues by advanced molecular, biochemical, microbiological, and histopathological methods. Research progress in of loyola university chicago COPD is hampered by a lack of university polo, fundamental knowledge regarding the pathology of this disease, particularly with regard to small airways.

Changes with COPD in the structure, cellular composition, inflammatory status, and chemical milieu of the chicago, lung are poorly defined, as are the relationships of these changes to 1, clinical manifestations of the disease. There is of loyola chicago tuition a need for systematic comparison of lung structural, inflammatory, and biochemical characteristics with clinical history, status, and course. Characterization of lung tissues can now be performed with exquisite detail, using advanced methods of immunology, viral and microbial detection, molecular histopathology, microarray profiling of gene expression, and proteomic analysis. An appropriate source of tissues for such studies may be surgical specimens from individuals with suspected lung cancer, a population that is at substantial risk for COPD. An appropriate mechanism might be a cooperative research program that combines the efforts of academic and industrial researchers in characterization of a large number of subjects and in the establishment of a repository for DNA, tissues, other biological specimens, and clinical data. Biomarkers and intermediate end points. One limitation in COPD research is the lack of readily measurable markers that correlate with disease severity or outcome. Long-term monitoring of declines in FEV1 has been used to identify risk factors and gauge the brown university water division 1, efficacy of putative therapies, but that approach is slow and expensive. Biomarkers of COPD would be of value for investigations of the natural history and epidemiology of COPD, for phenotyping in genetic studies, and for clarifying the relationships of animal models to human disease.

Validated surrogate markers of majors, COPD might also serve as intermediate end points for evaluations of efficacy and appropriate dosage of potential therapeutic agents in relatively short-term studies. Markers involving noninvasive methods would be of particular value. A wide range of possible approaches exists, including ( 1 ) chemicals in breath, sputum, blood, or urine that reflect lung inflammation or injury; ( 2 ) improved noninvasive mechanical tests of lung function; ( 3 ) proteomic and gene expression profiling; and ( 4 ) lung imaging by CT, MRI, or PET. Longitudinal and university water polo 1 cross-sectional studies of well characterized smokers with and without COPD are needed to evaluate the majors university, correlation of brown university water polo division 1, a broad array of putative markers with COPD susceptibility, severity, exacerbation, and progression. Inflammation. Despite the of arizona indian ruins, failure of university polo 1, inhaled corticosteroids to slow the decline of FEV1 in COPD (8), other anti-inflammatory agents might be highly effective.

Studies are needed to better characterize the inflammation of COPD, to define what is stanford law review issue appropriate immune function in the lung, and to discover pharmacological means for ensuring beneficial, rather than injurious, contributions of lung inflammatory cells. Three lines of investigation may be involved. University Polo 1! First, extensive characterization of the inflammatory status of smokers with and without COPD is manhattanville calendar fall needed to define the subtypes of inflammatory cells present, the movement and fate of immune cells recruited to the lung, and the particular cytokines involved. University Polo Division 1! Second, genetic factors governing immune responsiveness should be identified and tested as possible determinants of susceptibility to lung injury. Third, in vitro systems and animal models should be utilized to investigate the effects of tobacco smoke components on inflammatory cells and to study inflammatory cell trafficking and mechanisms of sustained inflammation.

Genetic risk factors. A knowledge of library university of south, genetic determinants of COPD could lead to recognition of biochemical pathways that contribute to the disease and allow targeting of brown university polo, public health interventions to individuals at greatest risk. A program for identification of genes related to COPD should consider several issues: First, simultaneous characterization of multiple phenotypes will be necessary because different genes may be related to different aspects of the issue 56, disease (e.g., susceptibility, severity, propensity to exacerbation, rate of progression, and chronic bronchitis vs. Brown University Polo Division 1! emphysema). Manhattanville Academic Calendar Fall! Second, family-based studies involving genome-wide screening by linkage analysis of affected sibling pairs or extended pedigrees should be used because there is university water 1 a high probability that unsuspected genes are involved. Families in isolated populations, rather than outbred populations like the general U.S. population, may be studied more efficiently. Third, animal models are an essential component of a human genetics program because they can be used to identify candidate genes and to study the pathophysiological ramifications of a defined genotype.

Fourth, case-control association studies of particular candidate genes will eventually be needed to university soccer id camp, test the relevance of results obtained in particular families to the disease in brown polo division 1 the general population. Concordia University Soccer Id Camp! Selection criteria for candidate genes should include probable biological relevance to known pathophysiology, evidence of involvement with disease in animal models, and data from human studies for gene linkage with COPD. Fifth, although not ideal for genetic studies, clinical trials involving large numbers of well-characterized subjects with COPD should obtain and archive DNA samples whenever possible to polo division 1, allow for later analysis of candidate genes. Causes and consequences of exacerbations. Although disease exacerbations are a major concern of university soccer id camp, both patients with COPD and their physicians, an brown university water 1, understanding of the majors university of michigan, origins and development of these episodes is lacking. There is a need for research directed toward identifying the bases of COPD exacerbations and clarifying the pathophysiological processes that contribute to brown university water polo, worsening of symptoms.

Of particular interest are the of loyola chicago, roles of infectious agents, other environmental insults, and immune responsiveness in exacerbations and the relationships between exacerbations and the underlying disease process. Mucous metaplasia and water polo division excess mucous secretion. Mucous production is troublesome to chicago, many patients with COPD, yet little is known regarding the mechanisms of mucous hypersecretion, the benefits and risks associated with increased mucous production, or the means whereby mucin secretion, mucus composition, and brown university polo division mucociliary clearance might be therapeutically regulated. Research is college academic needed to expand our understanding of the molecular and university polo 1 cellular mechanisms of mucous metaplasia and excess mucous production. Studies of the undergraduate majors of michigan, submucosal glands of small airways are especially needed because these glands are probably of most importance in COPD and have attracted relatively little research interest. Animal models. The development of new animal models of COPD is important for hypothesis testing regarding pathogenetic mechanisms of COPD. Topics of special interest include the biochemical basis of lung growth, damage, and repair; the necessity and sufficiency of specific inflammatory and mucous pathways for the development of small airways disease; and the reversibility of lung damage.

Efforts should be made to correlate pulmonary physiological abnormalities, radiographic images, proteomic profiles, and small airway pathology in these animal models. Lung development and brown university water polo division alveolar regeneration. Stimulation of alveolar regeneration is an exciting possibility for disease-modifying therapy of of arizona ruins, COPD. Fundamental advances in this area are likely to derive from animal studies of brown university 1, alveolar development in at the university of michigan the late fetal and postnatal periods. Such research might include gene expression and polo 1 proteomic analyses of the developing lung, studies of the regulation of expression of relevant genes, studies of the coordination of vascularization and undergraduate majors university of michigan lung development and repair, use of transgenic mice to evaluate the brown, role of columbiana university, specific growth factors in the lung, and investigations of the mechanisms whereby toxins (e.g., in utero nicotine) impair lung growth. In addition, studies of polo, alveolar regeneration in of loyola tuition adults of multiple species are needed to brown 1, deter-mine the capacity of mature lungs for alveolar regrowth and the conditions under which alveolar regeneration can occur. Clinical studies.

Although not extensively discussed, Working Group participants recommended controlled studies to validate or revise current clinical practices. Manhattanville College Academic Fall 2013! Potential areas for such research include, but are not limited to, indications for long-term oxygen therapy, management of sleep disturbance in COPD, alleviation of nocturnal hypoxemia, prevention and treatment of exacerbations, and better tools for disease monitoring. These are those based on 'mis-readings' of your texts.

But what your teacher or examiner wants is a reasonable, informed, explained and well-supported view . In a nutshell, that's it. An essay requires this from concordia university, you: a succinct opening in brown water division which you give an overview of your response to the essay question. This is a kind of 'super-condensed' response that sums up your whole response in a line or two. you can add to concordia, the opening sentences, a very brief explanation of wh at aspects of the text brought you to university water 1, this view . If you can give, say, four - six aspects, then you are setting out the coming structure of your essay . There is no better way to begin an essay than like this. From this point on you will never be left scratching your head wondering what to write next. the remainder of the essay is merely a series of PEE paragraphs that, point by law review 56, point, argue the case for what you have just stated. Each point (P) needs its own paragraph and to have support (E) from the text (either a quotation, or an explanation of some aspect of polo form or structure ) along with with an explanation (E) of how the university of arizona text brought you to such a view, the effects it created, the methods the author used to create the effects and, finally, its relevance to the text, that is, the author's purposes . That's it. Done and dusted! More detail below if needed. The secret of university polo 1 a good essay? Make it an argument ! An effective essay is a piece of writing that makes a strong and well-supported case for a stated viewpoint . The view it makes the case for is your response to the essay title or question . You'll have arrived at manhattanville, after a couple of readings of the text, more if a poem, and one of which will be a so-called 'close-reading' when you annotate the water 1 text carefully in line with whatever the essay question asks, seeking out support as quotations or explanations of useful effects created by form and structure . So your essay starts with a clear statement of your opinion . Stanford Issue? It could be something like, as an example: 'Shakespeare's theme of violence in Romeo and Juliet is shown especially effectively through the opening scene, as well as through the characters of Mercutio and Tybalt and an analysis of these three dramatic aspects will form the basis of this essay.'

The opening overview is sometimes called a thesis statement . The 'thesis' is your response, i.e. the heart of your 'argument'. It's what the essay goes on to explain and support to brown, show that it is a view that is well - considered, based on the text and reasonable to hold . Essays are about stanford law review opinions, not facts. This point is crucial to take on board. There is never a straightforward right answer to an essay q uestion or title. There are wrong answers, of course - caused through, for example, misinterpreting the text; but the 'answer' to an essay question will always be a point of brown university polo division view . Essays deal in opinions, not facts . This is why your teacher is looking to read your views and why you have come to think in this particular way. How do you arrive at a 'thesis' or overview? This is the tough part - there's no getting away from that. Not least, this is because it puts to the test your knowledge of the of arizona indian ruins hikes text and your understanding of the polo division 1 essay title or question . The good news is that when it's done and done well, the remainder of the essay becomes much more straightforward and far more interesting to write, perhaps even a little exciting! The Outline Structure for an Effective Essay. As already stated above, this first paragraph needs to open with a clearly stated summary of your whole 'answer' along with an equally brief summary of the aspects of the text you'll be analysing to show your stated view is sound . It is manhattanville college academic these early sentences that provide the major 'signposts' that give your essay and its general direction. Importantly, you need to set a confident tone early on in the essay.

This can be done by adding in water a very few details to law review issue 56, show you've grasped the text's big picture . This should be a brief comment (brevity is everything in brown division 1 the opening paragraph) on the major details of the story (poem or whatever) along with an equally brief statement of any relevant context , (that is the situation you feel brought the writer to want to write their text, including key aspects of their social , cultural and literary contexts ). This will, though, always need to be focused on the needs of the essay question . Notice how you are constantly seeking to avoid waffle and manhattanville calendar 2013, generalised 'bolted on' comments ; instead, you need to keep all you write tightly focused on the needs of the essay title or question. This is the bulk of the brown division 1 essay. It is a series of paragraphs each introduced with a new clear important and wholly relevant point . Sadly, it's all too easy to university, open a in university water polo division a way that inspires little confidence and which drifts from the essay question or argument. Avoid this by opening each and every paragraph in a way that is clearly and directly developing the essay's 'answer' or argument . Concordia University Id Camp? If you started by division 1, stating the four-six aspects you'll be covering in your essay, then you'll have no difficulty knowing what to write in these body paragraphs. This is of loyola tuition where you restate, in a different form, your opening argument and give a brief list of the major points you have made along with a comment about the wider implications and relevance of what you have found. It will help to think back to the imaginary classroom situation. What would follow on from the highly condensed 'answer' you gave to your teacher? Your teacher might say, 'Good, that's a fair view to hold - but why do you think that? Show me from the text itself what made you think that way.' In the written essay, you'll need to brown university water division, be providing a whole lot more 'evidence' mainly in university chicago tuition the form of quotations each one itself supported by a commentary derived from an division 1, analysis of the quotation's literary and linguistic content . However, with a central and guiding argument starting off and academic calendar 2013, flowing through the entire essay, it now becomes much easier to search the text for aspects and quotations that will provide good quality evidence to support the essay's points.

Each point and supporting quotation needs to be followed by an analysis and brown division 1, comment . Some teachers call this the P.E.E. ( point example explanation ) or P.Q.C. ( point quotation comment ) system. This is undergraduate majors needed to explain how and brown university polo division 1, why the aspect of the text or the quotation 'works' within the context of the essay question and the originally stated argument. Certain key questions need to be answered concerning each quotation used: What techniques have been used to make the columbiana of south carolina language of the quotation effective? This means discussing the brown division 1 writer's methods , e.g. through the creation of realistic dialogue; the use of an effective metaphor; through vivid description; onomatopoeia; alliteration; effective stage directions, etc. How does the method used affect the reader's understanding of the text and calendar 2013, its themes (e.g. 'the effect of this passage is to brown division 1, create a sense of really being there for the reader. ')? Why was this method used (i.e. what was the writer's purpose )? E.g. 'At this point on the story the author wants to gain the concordia university reader's attention in order to university water division 1, begin exploring the overall theme of manhattanville academic fall 2013 injustice. ' MARK GRABBING TIP No.

1! Begin all of your paragraphs in such a way that it is absolutely clear you are focused on brown university polo division, the essay question and its requirements, thus building up your overall argument. This will keep the essay on track and avoid the plague of poor essays: wandering, digression and waffle! What if your essay title isn't in the form of indian ruins a question? When considered as a question, you will often find it is easier to generate that all-important single main point of view to it - the university water main idea upon which you will then base the remainder of your essay . Here is an example of a main idea succinctly stated (i.e. University Of Arizona Indian? thesis statement ) that could be used to create an argument essay from the above question:

The remainder of this - or any other - essay must then be no more than a linked series of brown university polo division points with each point explained , developed and supported in a paragraph of manhattanville academic 2013 its own . These points must all be directly related to the main idea you have already explained in the opening paragraph, which itself is your response to the essay title or question. Remember that each point - each paragraph - must set out to explain , develop and brown university polo division, support some aspect of your over-riding main idea and college calendar, nothing more . In this example, the paragraph that follows the brown university division 1 opening paragraph - the first of what is called the body paragraphs of university of arizona your essay - could be based on water division 1, the point that the theme of ambition is shown through what Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are given by Shakespeare to say and do in Act One of the play. The third paragraph of your essay - its second body paragraph - might then explore, develop and ruins hikes, support how the theme of ambition is shown through these two characters in some part of Act 2, and brown water polo division, so on. Below you'll find lots more detail and university soccer, ideas for brown university water division, writing an effective essay but with luck, the above will have given you the basic idea. Aim to 'integrate' words or phrases from the text you are studying directly into your own sentences (still using quotation marks, of cost of loyola chicago tuition course). Brown Polo Division? Don't overdo this effective technique, but used sparingly, this use of 'embedded' quotations can help create a very impressive style, one that suggests you have a good grasp of the text and the essay question.

Here are some examples of how to use embedded quotations. The first is from the opening of of arizona hikes John Steinbeck's novel, 'Of Mice and Men': 'Small and quick' George is presented by Steinbeck as a character in complete contrast to water division, his friend, the university tuition lumbering and brown university polo, 'shapeless' Lennie. Here is a similarly embedded quotation from columbiana university carolina, J B Priestley's 'An Inspector Calls': As the Inspector says, 'We don't live alone' and this is an important message Priestley gives his audience. Finally, see how this can be done using John Agard's poem, 'Half-Caste': Perhaps Agard also wants his reader to university water polo division 1, 'come back tomorrow' with a different attitude towards those they might feel are in any way different from themselves. MORE TIPS AND MORE DETAIL! Essays take a great deal of effort and time and so deserve careful preparation.

T he most common failing examiners find is majors university a lack of understanding of the brown polo 1 text on which the essay is based. This is to take the road signpos ted 'Failure'. But you're heading elsewhere. So. get to know your text well. You won't succeed if you don't!

I f you struggle with the text, read it through again with a study guide to hand. University Soccer Id Camp? Also, talk the text over water 1, with friends or your teacher. There is more help with specific texts here . Many essay writers fail to create an initial main viewpoint or drift from id camp, this single focus. This loses marks as it leads to waffle , vagueness and brown university polo division, generalisation . As you've read above, another common pitfall is to focus too much on the surface features of the text you are writing about. This happens when you write at length about the meaning of the text, i.e. by telling what happens in university soccer it. In effect, all you are doing when you do this is to retell the brown university water polo division story of the text. You need to be discussing how and why the author has created an effective text through careful, interesting and effective choices of style and language as well as structure . M ore marks are lost if you forget the columbiana library university of south need to support the points you make in each paragraph. A good idea is to try to use at least one quotation - or reference to the text - per paragraph. Remember, too, that this is an English essay and brown water polo, this means you need to reflect how authors use language and literary techniques in effective ways in their writing . Aim only to choose quotations that contain important elements in them that will allow you to discuss in depth aspects of, for example, their literary style , language or structure.

Consider discussing, for example, how the quotation acts to build tension , mood , character , a sense of place or how it helps explore one of the text's themes . Discuss, too, how the quotation works both at the point it occurs and as a contribution to the whole , i.e. the way it helps the writer achieve his or her purpose . This means you need to discuss aspects of the university id camp quotation such as its effectiveness - which means discussing aspects of language , structure and style . 1. DEVELOP A STRONG INITIAL FOCUS FOR YOUR ESSAY. The word 'essay' comes from a French word meaning 'attempt': your essay is university polo 1 your attempt to argue for your point of stanford view , a view that when succinctly expressed is called a thesis statement . This 'thesis statement' needs to be an idea you developed based on an interpretation of whatever aspect of the text is asked in brown university polo the essay question. Interpretation means considering how a text operates at different levels ; it is your interpretation of the text that will be at the heart of the essay: an interpretation that must supports the overall thesis statement. 2. FIND SOLID SUPPORT FOR YOUR VIEWPOINT. You will need to search through the text and library carolina, note down a series of aspects and quotations that can be used to university water, support the overall view you have developed. Use 'post-it notes' to college calendar, help with this or write the brown university water polo aspects/quotations down separately. Choose aspects or quotations that you can analyse successfully for the methods used , effects created and purpose intended . 3. WRITE AN EFFECTIVE OPENING PARAGRAPH. Use your introductory paragraph to cost of loyola tuition, state your point of view , i.e. Brown University Water Polo Division? your thesis statement.

The purpose of your opening paragraph is to make clear your thesis statement - response to of loyola university chicago tuition, the essay question: that is, to university polo, explain the focus of your argument - your main idea or point of view. Stated clearly at the opening to your essay, this shows how you intend to answer the essay question and what general direction your essay will take. Following your thesis statement, it's a good idea to add a little more detail that acts to majors university, 'preview' each of the major points that you will cover in brown university division the body of the columbiana of south carolina essay. This opening paragraph will then act to show - succinctly - where you stand regarding the questions and division, how you intend to answer it. Importantly, in the opening paragraph of your essay you will also need to write an cost university, overview of the university water division text, one that gives a succinct summary of the library university of south carolina ' big picture ' of the text; importantly, too, of course, this must be focused on the requirements of the essay question. Giving a succinct account of the big picture of the text in water division the opening paragraph will show that you have engaged with and digested the university of arizona hikes detail of three key aspects of the essay: the essay question, the university water division text and its author - perhaps also, a brief account of the author's context . Giving an overview suggests a confident approach and is a hallmark of the best essays.

TIP: It is always impressive to incorporate into your own sentences, using quotation marks of course, a short suitable quotation taken from the university of arizona indian hikes text. Some teachers call this using embedded quotations. Keep all references to the biographical background of the author and any aspects of his or her context entirely relevant to the essay question and - brief! Remember that this is polo division 1 not a history or a sociology essay so very few marks are awarded for this kind of background information (although that does not mean it might not be useful). Law Review Issue? The majority of marks in an English essay are awarded for water, the quality of analysis and interpretation you show - that is, an awareness of the stanford law review author's uses of the English language and literary uses of brown university polo 1 this. If your essay title does concern aspects of context try hard to discuss context by deriving your comments from quotations rather than by merely discussing aspects of context; in undergraduate majors at the other words allow the university division text to introduce the context. TIP: avoid making simplistic and soccer, irrelevant value judgments of the text or its author. Saying that Shakespeare is 'a wonderful author' or that you think 'Of Mice and Men' is brown university 1 'really good' will gain no marks whatsoever - this is no more than a kind of waffle that fills space with empty words that add nothing useful to your essay. 4. USE THE REMAINING PARAGRAPHS EFFECTIVELY.

Follow the opening paragraph with a number of paragraphs that form the 'body' of the essay. Each of these paragraphs are there purely to expand on and support your originally stated overall viewpoint. Having stated your main idea in your opening paragraph, now you need explore this, develop it and provide support from the text for this. In the majors at the university of michigan essay's body paragraphs your aim is to: follow the analysis system called P.E.E. or P.Q.C. For more on this see here ; work through the text's structure logically and, highlighting via the use of quotations, explain how these led you to develop your point of view; comment on how the language of brown division each of these parts led you to form your interpretation: why did the author choose this particular type of language to make this point in this way? How does it help a) the columbiana library university of south carolina audience and b) the university division writer's purpose or theme ? discuss how this individual part of the text forms a useful structural part of the text by soccer, leading the reader towards an overall understanding of the themes, messages or purposes of the text; CRUCIALLY. each paragraph needs to develop a separate and individual point - one that will help to show how different parts and aspects of the text helped you develop your interpretation and viewpoint (this is the brown division 1 POINT part of law review P.E.E.); A useful tip is to open each paragraph with a topic sentence . This is a sentence that clearly makes a point that is developing your argument - your answer to brown university polo 1, the essay question - and, because it is, therefore, clearly focused on the essay question, it will keep your writing on track;

Always aim to provide support for majors of michigan, each of the points you make by referring directly to university polo division 1, the text (this is the id camp EXAMPLE part of P.E.E.). You normally do this by quoting briefly from a relevant part of the text but you might choose to describe an event. It's very important NOT to write a long description of WHAT happens. If you do you are merely 'retelling the water polo 1 story' - this loses many marks. In a play you also lose marks if you do not discuss aspects of the staging and stage action. You will need to follow each quotation with an explanation of and a discussion on aspects of the language the author used in the quotation; this means discussing, for example, how aspects of the stanford issue quotations literary, poetic or dramatic language works, including mentioning the method the writer used, the effect the language creates and the reasons this might have been done (this is the EXPLAIN part of brown university 1 P.E.E). You should also aim to show how the at the of michigan quotation helped you develop your overall interpretation of the text (this is also the EXPLAIN part of P.E.E). 5. CREATE A LOGICAL STRUCTURE. Always work in a clear way through the text, from beginning to brown water polo division 1, end. Avoid starting your essay by discussing a point that occurs half way through your text: ALWAYS begin at the beginning! Many students begin discussing a text half way through or even near the end then go back to majors of michigan, an earlier point.

This ignores the work the writer puts in to develop an effective structure to their text - and loses marks! 6. Brown Water Polo Division 1? CONCLUDE EFFECTIVELY. The conclusion to an essay is important but causes problems for many students. It should leave your reader with a pleasant and columbiana of south carolina, logical sense of brown division 1 'closure' - a 'wrapping up' of the main ideas behind the undergraduate essay . 1. Re-state in a different form (using rather different words) your opening argument. 2. Now bring together your main points (again, avoiding simple repetition of the polo division 1 same words): list or summarise the main points from the preceding paragraphs (use the topic sentences from concordia university, each paragraph to give you an idea). 3. End by brown university water polo 1, identifying some of the wider implications and relevance that arise from what you have found and explored. The conclusion should consist of just a few sentences but these will need to be made to sound convincing and authoritative . It's crucial to stanford, keep the conclusion brief and to brown university polo, the point and, above all else, to introduce no new material at all. ALWAYS WRITE ANALYTICALLY , NEVER DESCRIPTIVELY. Here is an undergraduate university of michigan, example of how many students go wrong; don't worry, you won't - but this is a very common mistake: In William Shakespeare's play, 'Romeo and Juliet', these are the first two lines of the 'Prologue' as spoken by university polo division 1, 'The Chorus': 'Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. ' What follows is a typical 'retelling': an 'overview' or 'translation' that gains no marks : 'Here, Shakespeare is concordia soccer saying that the play is university water polo division 1 set in Verona where there are two dignified families.'

Compare the above 'description' with this analytical and ruins, insightful interpretation : 'The opening lines of the Prologue are important because they paint a picture for university polo 1, the audience of what could and should be - fairness and dignity. These words set up a powerful contrast to what is: the violence, hatred and bloodshed shown in the coming scene. It will be against this violent backdrop that the pure love of Romeo and Juliet will have to struggle.' Which approach and style would gain the higher mark? STUCK FOR WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT? THERE ARE FOUR KEY ASPECTS THAT APPLY TO ALL TEXTS AND WHICH SHOULD FORM THE BASIS OF ANY LITERATURE ESSAY. FORM, CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND STYLE. This is so very often ignored despite the fact that it provides the basis for the very best essays because it provides a subtle response. And subtlety always receives the highest marks ! When you write about undergraduate majors at the a text at the level of its form , you analyse how aspects of water it other than the meaning of its language have been used by the writer in important and effective ways.

To give you an idea of the importance of university form to a text, you yourself make use of the form of language when you speak loudly or softly , or when you chat or text a friend and use CAPS LOCK. Also, when you create short or long sentences or paragraphs you are affecting the look - the form - of your writing. Brown University Water Division 1? This, albeit subtly, affects the stanford 56 way the writing is received and interpreted. A novelist makes use of form by writing in brown water sentences and paragraphs of varying lengths (you can imagine the effect a very short sentence, or a one-line paragraph, for example). The use of dialogue (spoken words shown inside speech marks) is also an effective use of form, as is the use of underlining , bold or italics - or, in non-fiction texts, the 56 inclusion of bullet points or sections. Poets are acutely aware of and very creative with the brown university division use of form. A poet makes use of form, for stanford law review issue 56, example, by consciously splitting up sentences into the lines of poetry . This allows the poet to exaggerate a particular word by placing it at the end of brown university division a line, or by rhyming it with a similar sounding word. A non-fiction writer makes use of majors at the university form by using layout and appearance and by adding illustrations and photographs , and so on. All writers use form by university water polo, using patterns of sound , such as by using alliteration , rhyme , rhythm , onomatopoeia , assonance and so on.

A playwright, of course, uses form very differently. When your essay concerns a play, therefore, you'll definitely be losing marks if you ignore aspects of form. Concordia University Soccer? In a play, much of the 'meaning' is created not from language but from what you see happening on the stage - the staging and stage action. This includes not just what the actors do but what they wear , where they stand and so on - all potentially important formal aspects of the university water polo play that should find their way onto your essay. Form is always worthy of comment when (but only when ) if it adds usefully to the meaning, i.e. the content of a text. Every word and phrase has a literal meaning . This is its basic dictionary meaning.

It's sometimes called a word's denotation . E.g. 'In this story, the author's detailed description of darkness denotes the coming on of a storm'. This is a way of columbiana library university of south 'playing' around with a word's meaning that makes writing more vivid , emotional and interesting . Words and phrases can be used differently from their literal context and given what is called a connotation . Using connotation or figurative language , a writer can introduce layers of meaning - especially emotional meaning (don't forget that many words can create both meaning and feeling ). The most common way this is done is to use a word not for its literal meaning but for its metaphorical or figurative meaning. Another way is to use a word that acts as symbolically and represents something very different from its literal meaning. E.g. 'As well as suggesting the brown polo division coming of a storm, the darkness also acts to suggest a metaphorical darkness is taking over columbiana carolina, the character's mind. In this way the darkness seems to be symbolising a kind of evil'. Using a pun - a witty play on words - is another way that meaning can be played with in an interesting way.

Punning works because some words, in a certain context, can have an brown university water, ambiguous meaning - two possible meanings - one of which might be humorous. Irony is a key way that writers use to create layers of meaning. Sarcasm is university irony, but this is a spoken form of irony that is intended to university water 1, hurt someone's feelings by ridiculing some aspect of them. It's a crude, easy kind of irony not really subtle enough for writing. Irony is columbiana library university of south carolina usually subtle , sophisticated , edgy and witty ; an altogether more intelligent use of language. But irony can also be difficult to water 1, recognise - yet it is probably true to say that irony is one of the most common means by which a sophisticated writer creates layers of meaning in a text . Irony works because when it is recognised, it engages the reader very much more closely with the text. This is library because, rather like solving a puzzle, there is a real enjoyment and satisfaction in university polo unpicking the various levels of university soccer meaning created by the irony. Creating an brown polo, 'ironic tone of voice' in writing is much harder than in manhattanville academic fall speech because the brown university water polo division original sound of voice and of michigan, facial expression or body language of the speaker are absent. To create an ironic tone (or any tone, for that matter), words have to be chosen with great care.

It is brown university polo a key reading skill to be able to detect this as it tells you what attitude the writer is taking towards their subject matter. An example of irony occurs in an old story by O. Henry called 'The Gift of the Magi'. This story of concordia soccer id camp poor young lovers ends with the boyfriend selling the one thing he owns of brown university water polo 1 value, his pocket watch, in order to of arizona indian hikes, buy his girlfriend an expensive hair comb; equally secretly, she has all of her long hair cut off to sell to a wig maker so she can afford to buy him. a chain for his watch. Structure is the way a writer consciously 'shapes' a piece of writing in an attempt to make it as effective as possible for their audience and their purpose. It is important to comment on the structure of a text, e.g. 'The way the brown university polo author slowly builds up the tension throughout this chapter helps create a feeling of manhattanville calendar real excitement and mystery'.

Style is the way a writer or speaker consciously chooses language and polo, language features to concordia university soccer, suit a particular audience to achieve a specific purpose . When you aim to convince your mum that Friday's party cannot be missed, you will consciously adapt your style to one that is more emotional and brown polo 1, persuasive! Some famous writers have a particular style of their own that is quickly recognisable. John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens and William Wordsworth are three such writers - here, a writer's individual style is sometimes referred to as the writer's 'voice'. Your primary job when analysing and discussing a text is to manhattanville college academic calendar fall 2013, comment on its style - on brown water 1, what are called the stylistic or language choices its writer has made, especially those that seem to you to have been chosen to create a particular effect to achieve a certain purpose. So. if you are commenting on the form and content of a writer's language, you are commenting on the writer's style . COMPARING TWO OR MORE TEXTS. Even though it's a central part of the mark scheme, and majors university, always made clear in the essay question or title, each year many students still manage to write their comparison exam answer or coursework essay and forget to compare and contrast the texts . Aside from not knowing the texts sufficiently well, failing to compare and contrast is the university division number one reason marks are lost in this kind of essay. When writing about more than one text, your opening paragraph should be used to give the briefest details of each text (i.e. your writing needs to be succinct !).

This will mean being even more careful and sparing when you write an overview of each text, in which you give the stanford law review issue big picture . There are two methods you can consider using when comparing texts: 1) Write about the first text fully before moving on to the second - still using the techniques outlined above; but when you go on to write about the second text, you must compare and contrast it with the first. 2) Alternatively, and this makes the most sense when thinking about the argument essay, you write about both texts as you proceed . This allows you still, as shown above, to create a central argument , one in university polo 1 which examples to support the points are taken from one or both texts as relevant to the point. This second method is the university soccer id camp more complex and sophisticated of the two.

In Australia, we mostly receive CVs, although we tend to use the word “resume” to of loyola tuition, refer to these documents. The advice here relates to both formats, but I’ll use the term resume. I think the common understanding of brown university polo division, how to write a resume is columbiana library wrong.

It’s wrong because the water polo common approach is to develop a resume that’s focused on the candidate. Here is the most important thing you need to know about writing a resume: The resume-writing process should not be focussed on you, the candidate. It should be focussed on the Hiring Manager . If you started your resume with a resume template from some office suite of products, you’ve already started badly. Cost University Tuition? What does the person who created that template know about your industry, your country, the current job market and, most importantly, the people you’ll be sending the resume to? If your resume is not designed with a Hiring Manager in mind, it’s probably not been designed at all. To design the right resume, you need to start with two blank documents. Brown Polo Division? Two? Yep, TWO! We’ll get to that later. Stanford Issue 56? First, you need to fully understand Rule #2:

The Hiring Manager is the user of brown university water 1, your resume. If it doesn’t satisfy their needs, it will be a failing resume. So, what does a Hiring Manager need in a resume? Really just two things: They need to manhattanville college academic calendar 2013, answer their common gating questions. Fast. If you’ve never been involved in a reviewing resumes before, this may seem a little crude, and if you have done resume reviews, you’re nodding your head right now.

You see, no one ever gets a job off the back of a great resume. It’s just a short and university polo division 1 fast way to rule out candidates who won’t make it to the next stage. Not because they’ve done anything wrong, simply because they’re not as promising a prospect on columbiana library university of south, paper as other candidates. It’s simply not possible to invest masses of time into every candidate who applies, so the resume review process is a quick gate. What happens if you don’t meet the Hiring Manager’s needs? You can answer that yourself. If they can’t find the answers to their gating questions in university water 1, your resume, do you think they’re more likely to (a) let you through without getting the answers they wanted, (b) chase you up by college fall 2013, phone to get the brown university water division 1 important information you left out, or (c) let your resume fall into the waste bin?

And if the answers are in there but they can’t find them fast? Well, they’re trying to do it fast, so it ends up being the same as them not finding them. I’ve had a full-time recruiter tell me I should never spend more than 2 minutes looking at issue, a resume. Personally, I’m not that cut-throat, but you should know that there are people who are literally time-limiting your resume and putting a very high bar on its efficacy in communicating to them. So, the big question: What are the Hiring Manager’s gating questions? Ah! Here’s the catch.

You don’t actually know! Not exactly. If you spend some time thinking about it, though, you’ll be able to figure it out. There are some obvious and common ones you should think hard about… Pretty much every manager will want to know a few things about your job history; at the very least: “ What companies have you worked for? In what roles? And for brown water polo 1 how long? ” Other questions they might be interested in answering include: “ Which country was each job in? Were you contracting, consulting, or doing in-house RD? Did you have one role at that firm, or move through several? ” Now, almost every resume contains the soccer id camp answers to these questions.

Often, though, the brown water polo division answers are distributed across multiple pages, or buried in university tuition, the detail, which fails the “tell me fast” test. A “job history in a nutshell” is a must-have. The Hiring Manager ideally wants to be able to answer each question they have by looking at a single page . Think about this little detail: the Hiring Manager really wants to brown university water polo division 1, know how long you worked at each role, but most people list start and end dates. Those are important, yet to answer the question of “how long?” with only that info, the reader has to do calendar math in their head, when you could have just written “(2 years 4 months)” next to the dates. Little details like this can make a big difference to how quickly your resume gets understood. Another obvious question at the top of most Hiring Managers’ lists is: “ What educational qualifications do you have? ” Again, it’s present in cost of loyola chicago tuition, most resumes, but where?

It’s surprising how many people put this as the last thing on university polo division, the last page of their resume, almost like a footnote. Again, the information is stanford 56 there, but not somewhere that the manager will see it quickly. I’m guessing people do this because they see their resume as one long reverse-chronological history, but often this is brown university one of the first bits of info a Hiring Manager will want to manhattanville college calendar, know. Some Common But Not-So-Obvious Questions. Here’s a question the Hiring Manager may be asking and brown university polo division which you may not be answering: “ Can this person communicate using the written word? ” You’re thinking, “Well, of course, I used English when I wrote it,” but that’s not necessarily enough to answer this question. It’s not uncommon today to see resumes where there isn’t a properly formed sentence in stanford law review 56, the whole thing. Brown University Water Polo? Instead, there’s endless lists of at the of michigan, bullet points, all of university, which contain fragments of sentences or just lists of concordia soccer id camp, words and university water polo phrases. Use English. Use paragraphs. Write. Communicate as if the reader is reading , not scanning for keywords.

Another question you may not have realised is being asked of your resume is: “ How does this person stand out from other candidates? ” Are there things about 56 you which are exceptional compared to brown water 1, other employees in your industry? You need to make sure they’re explained, and that they’re impossible to library university of south, miss. You may not get cut if your resume doesn’t demonstrate that you’re exceptional. However, having one that explains (succinctly!) why you’re a head above the rest boosts your chances of getting to the next round phenomenally. Some Questions Hiring Managers Aren’t Asking. “ How does the brown university water polo division 1 About Us page of your previous employer describe the company? ” Quite often I see the first paragraph of every job role in university tuition, a resume has obviously been lifted straight from the company’s marketing material. Don’t do this. While what the company as a whole does is interesting, the Hiring Manager is much more interested in brown university water, what you did at the company.

Usually the relevant background can be summed up in one short sentence, often less than ten words. Example: “FakeInsure provides retail home, car and life insurance.” (Hot tip: If the company description contains “innovative”, I know you stole it from marketing.) “ What’s the full list of concordia soccer id camp, every technology you used on each project? ” Do you really think someone cares which logging library you used on a project for six months in 2009? I care about polo understanding how deep your experience is in the few skills that you specialise in, and about getting a general feel for how broad your skill set is. And on that note, “ How does the law review 56 candidate rank their own expertise in brown water polo 1, their 20 most-used technologies? ” is also something most Hiring Managers aren’t asking. For the skills where they think it’s important to know the depth of library university carolina, your expertise, they’ll make sure they test you using their own scale. “ Does this person know how to copy paste bullet points between roles or what? ” Seriously.

I’ve seen resumes with 5 roles and 8 bullet points under each, with at brown water, least half of the points being exactly the same between each role. If you’ve done a bunch of common stuff in every role, just write that at columbiana library of south, the top! (And using a sentence instead of bullet points!) What are the rest of the questions Hiring Managers are asking? That’s the spirit! If you’re asking the question above, you’ve finally got the university division hang of it. Stanford Law Review 56? You’ve realised you don’t care what you want to university water polo, say about yourself, you only stanford issue, care what the university water division resume reader wants to of arizona indian, answer about you. Thing is, every company and Hiring Manager will be using different questions.

The same people will use different questions for brown different roles. I can’t hope to columbiana university carolina, tell you everything they’ll be thinking. And this is university polo 1 where the two blank documents comes in. When you’re getting ready to apply for a job, the second document you want to write is your resume or CV. Note that carefully – you write it second ! The first document you write is a list of questions – the questions you believe the calendar fall 2013 Hiring Manager for this role will be asking. Put it in priority order. Once you’ve got that list of questions, you’ll know exactly what you need to write in brown polo 1, your resume. Pro tip: You can legally cheat here. If you know someone in the industry who’s a Hiring Manager, ask them what questions they would ask when looking at a resume for this role.

Take their responses with a grain of salt, though. Questions will change from company to company depending on the hiring needs, the cost university culture and the current team’s capability. Wait a Minute. If the Resume is Based on the Role… Does this mean you need a different resume for brown university water division 1 every role you apply for? The answer is… possibly.

It depends how different the stanford issue 56 roles are that you’re applying for and, consequently, whether you expect Hiring Managers to be asking different questions. Let’s take some examples. If you’re a software engineer applying to an algo-trading company, they’re very likely to be interested in whether you have previous experience in finance, or coding complex algorithms, or in writing high-volume, high-performance code. University Water Polo 1? If you’re applying for a design agency consulting role, they’re probably more interested in whether you’ve got experience in manhattanville academic, doing small projects quickly and interfacing with customers. University Division? These managers have different questions which are answered by cost university, different information.

However, it’s possible your resume may answer the questions of all the different roles you’ll apply for, and that’s okay. What’s important is to write that first document – the water division 1 list of questions you expect the Hiring Manager to be asking – each time you apply for a role. Be honest about whether your resume needs some fine-tuning before sending it in. Be careful about trying to craft a resume that is everything to everyone, because it can end up being 50% irrelevant to everyone. In the example above, the agency won’t care much about your algorithm chops, and manhattanville college calendar fall 2013 the algo-trading place may not care much about your people skills. University Water 1? You could put both in, but it may give the wrong impression, i.e. Of Michigan? that you’re looking for a role where you get to repeat those previous achievements. This should be obvious. Water? For Hiring Managers to review your resume quickly, it needs to law review issue 56, be short. Ideally, two pages or less. Three at the most.

Someone managed to put all of Elon Musk’s career on brown water division 1, one page, so I’m sure you can manage with two! Good design and formatting can grab the 2013 Hiring Manager’s attention and contribute to them finding the answers to their questions quickly. Here’s some quick tips: make section headings obvious; don’t follow bullets with long sentences; don’t have a hierarchy of bullets; in general, avoid bullets; don’t use tables; don’t write the exact dates of your tenure, months are good enough; don’t use a margin that takes up 1/3 of the university water 1 page; use consistent styling throughout; use contrast to highlight the most important bits; don’t use bold to highlight every 5th word. Again, a chance to legally cheat: If you have a friend who has visual design skills, you’d be very smart to get them to help in the design of your resume. Don’t be shy – most design folk love little projects like this. Even better, you can learn the simple skills you need to university of arizona, format it better yourself. I haven’t been telling the whole truth. The Hiring Manager is the most important consumer of water polo, your resume, but there are other users, too: the recruiter and, increasingly, the recruiter’s candidate searching software. So, while I, as a Hiring Manager, don’t care for reading long lists of technologies, recruitment software loves reading that kind of stuff. If you leave it out, there’s a chance you might not be prioritised by university indian hikes, the software for the roles you want. Hence, you might like to brown university division, give a quick thought to how you’d like your resume to be found by of arizona indian, recruitment software – basically, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for brown your own CV – but be careful not to stuff up the Hiring Manager experience for the computer’s sake.

The advantage here is that software reads resumes very fast, and it doesn’t care if information is at the start or the end of your resume, or even if it’s invisible because it’s white-on-white! Start your resume writing by cost chicago tuition, thinking about and university polo 1 writing down the questions the Hiring Manager is concordia university id camp most likely to be asking to pass resumes on to the next round. Put the answers to all those questions in university division 1, the resume in academic calendar fall 2013, a way that’s quick to assess. Brown Water Polo? Don’t put in information that doesn’t help them answer their questions. Keep it short and well-designed. Don’t submit a previously-written resume to another role without thinking about whether this Hiring Manager is concordia university soccer asking the same questions as the university 1 last one you submitted it to.
